The Humpback Dolphins taxonomy is still discussed. There can be up to five different species, but most authorities only calculates with two: Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphin and the Atlantic Humpback Dolphin. But there is most definetly two populations of the first mentioned species. One type is seen west of Sumatra in Indonesia, the other south and east of the island. The animals to the west has a more distinguishable hump, while the animals to the east has a higher dorsal fin, but no hump. In this area they can be mistaken for bottlenosed dolphins.
Behaviour:
Normally dificult to approach, has a tendency to avoid ships and dive only to surface much further away. Seldomly bowrides. Sometimes swims on the side and splashes with the flippers on the surface. Has been observed among Bottlenosed Dolphins.
