Hear the Humpbacks
The humpbacks are considered the most complex and mysterious singers in the ocean, and researchers have recorded the Madagascar humpbacks' distinctive ballads over the past two seasons.

Click on the audio buttons to hear their songs. You'll need RealAudio to hear the whales sing. If you don't have RealAudio, you can download it from here.

NEW: Songs from the current Madagascar expedition.

We've also compiled humpback songs from around the world. Keep in mind that while scientists remain mystified by much of humpback communication, they believe that only the male humpbacks sing, and that they do so most often in their breeding grounds. Scientists also know that the humpback songs differ around the world from community to community; they can evolve into complex, hours-long melodies over the course of a year.
